Unemployed people in ‘cohousing’ have the right to unemployment benefits as 'singles'

Last week, Sita Vanbinst received broad press coverage. She authored an article in The Juristenkrant, a Belgian legal journal, on the unemployment benefits of a cohabitant in a cohousing. Because of its apparent impact on society as a whole, it was picked up by several newspapers. The article covers the context and the practical consequences of a recent decision rendered by the Brussels labor court. It held that a job-seeker living in a cohousing can apply for unemployment benefits as a “single” instead of a “cohabitant”, in absence of solidarity between the cohabitants. In turn, this results in higher benefit pay-outs than was previously the case. Click here for the full article (in dutch).
